84 - Dear Jim

This week your friends Count Vardulon and The Divemistress gush all over Stephen Moffat's latest project, which makes the Count squeal with delight.  They also review a new Kevin Costner movie, which makes the Count sigh with regret.  Tune in to hear the most Canadian discussion ever--it's about beer!

Poll results:  The question was, "What is least important in an action movie?"  Most of you chose backstory, and there was a tie between character development and subplots.

  1. So I looked up La Chasse Galerie, or The Flying Canoe, and it turns out I got a few details wrong and totally missed out on the end.

The story goes something like this:

A group of voyageurs or loggers were stuck in the forest on New Year's eve and could not travel home to their wives and girlfriends. They made a deal with the devil, who would enchant their canoe so they may fly over the trees and mountain tops to spend the night at home. Returning to the forest the next morning, by the same means, one of the men exclaimed "My God!" At the mention of God, the canoe plummeted to earth and the men were never seen or heard from again.

  2. I love the title of this Avod. Is that a reference to the wonderful conclusion of episode 3 of Sherlock? Because that conclusion was one of my favorite parts of a great 4 and a half hours of television.

  3. It surely is, Mike! Sherlock is one of the best things I've seen all year.

  4. Also, fun fact: Mark Gatiss actually played... that guy who is in both episodes 1 and 3 and is one of my favorite minor characters ever.

Also, I actually watched Sherlock while it was on PBS thanks to the recommendation of this show, and I should say... thank you SO MUCH.
